Essential Oils: Kitchen, cooking and dining

 

  • Add 5 – 10 drops in total of your favourite pure essential or fragrant oils, to the water in your oil burner on a nearby kitchen windowsill. Enjoy the aroma as you prepare a meal.
  • Dispel household cooking odours by adding a few drops of Clove Bud essential oil to a simmering pot of water. The Clove oil lends a festive and warm, spicy fragrance to the room. (Do not leave the pot unattended)
  • To scent your kitchen cupboards and drawers, put a few drops of fragrant oil onto cotton wool balls and place inconspicuously in the corners.
  • A few drops of essential or fragrant oil can be dropped onto cloth table mats whereby the heat of the food on the plates will help release the scent. This is lovely for a special occasion.
  • Enjoy a scented candle at the dining table by placing a couple of drops of fragrant oil into the hot melted wax around the wick. (Do this after you have initially let the candle burn for a minute or two and is then blown out.) You can then safely relight the candle.
  • Put a few drops of fragrant oil onto a paper towel or cardboard tube. Add it to the contents of your recycling bin to mask any unpleasant odours.
  • Clean your fridge with a drop or two of pure essential oil such as Lavender or Lemon added to the final rinse water.
  • Put 50 g coarsely ground black peppercorns in a small glass jar. Add 4 drops Lemon essential oil. Mix, and put in a sealed bag for a few days before using. Add the mixture to a pepper mill.
  • Finish stir fries or noodle dishes with 1 – 2 drops Ginger essential oil added to the dish.
  • Add 1 -2 drops Lemon or Sweet Orange essential oil to 1 litre of water. Chill in a jug before serving.
  • Instead of using a tea bag, add 1 drop of Peppermint essential oil to a cup of boiling water for a refreshing drink.
  • When roasting a whole chicken, combine 2 drops each of Rosemary and Lemon essential oils with 4 tbsp of olive oil in a mixing cup. Brush the already cooked chicken with this mixture, cover it and place back in the oven for 10 – 15 minutes to allow the oils to penetrate.
